 Excess unesterified cellular cholesterol from cells is picked up by HDL particles and esterified by LCAT. The cholesterol esters in HDL are transferred to lower-density lipoproteins (VLDL and LDL) by CETP. These lipoproteins deliver cholesterol by apo-E-mediated mechanisms to the liver, from where they can be excreted.
